Brandenburg eSAF
From Renewable Power Generation to electro-Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Project at a glance

The project is designed to be a large-scale Power-to-Liquid (PtL) facility producing electro-Sustainable Aviation Fuel (eSAF) that will supply synthetic aviation fuel to help meet growing demand for sustainable aviation fuels in Germany and across Europe.

The project is one of Germany's most important decarbonisation projects: the construction of the largest industrial plant for the production of sustainable aviation fuels (e-SAF) in Germany to date. It supports the ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation, which stipulates an e-SAF blending quota of 1.2% from 2030, as well as the EU's climate targets: 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and climate neutrality by 2050.

A Power-to-Liquid Facility for Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Why Schwedt?

Schwedt offers a strong combination of existing refinery infrastructure, renewable energy potential, CO₂ availability, and future hydrogen connectivity. The location is especially well suited for Power-to-Liquid production because the facility will be built on the PCK refinery site, enabling it to benefit from established industrial infrastructure, logistics, utilities, and energy-sector expertise.

Additional advantages include:

  • Access to biogenic CO₂ from local industrial sources, including LEIPA

  • Strong regional potential for renewable electricity from wind and solar PV

  • Existing refinery and industrial infrastructure at the PCK site

  • Planned integration into Germany’s Hydrogen Core Network

  • Skilled industrial workforce and established energy expertise

  • Close proximity to major logistics and aviation hubs, including Berlin Brandenburg Airport, Hamburg,
    and Leipzig/DHL

Together, these factors make Schwedt a strategic location for developing a new e-fuels and hydrogen-based industrial value chain.

From green electricity to climate-neutral aviation fuel

Brandenburg eSAF uses the Power-to-Liquid (PtL) process to produce climate-neutral aviation fuels from green hydrogen and biogenic CO₂. At its core is the G2L™ eFuels technology an d eREACT™ technology from Topsoe combined with Sasol’s Fischer–Tropsch synthesis. The overall carbon efficiency exceeds 95%.

The green hydrogen will be sourced primarily through the hydrogen core network, including the FLOW pipeline, and supplemented by on-site electrolysis. LEIPA Georg Leinfelder GmbH, a paper manufacturer located directly at the Schwedt site, will supply the biogenic CO₂.

Power-to-Liquid Explained: From Renewable Power to eSAF

Renewable Power + Water = Green Hydrogen

Wind and solar power are used to power an electrolyser that splits water into green hydrogen and oxygen. Green hydrogen is a key building block for eSAF production.

Circular CO₂ + Green Hydrogen = Syngas

Sustainable CO₂ from biogenic sources is combined with green hydrogen to produce syngas using efficient electrically heated technology.

Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis >> Syncrude

In the Fischer–Tropsch reactor, synthesis gas (syngas) undergoes a process established in industrial applications for decades and is converted into syncrude, the precursor to the final aviation fuel.

Hydroprocessing >> eSAF / eKerosene

Synthetic hydrocarbons are refined through hydroprocessing  into certified eSAF/eKerosene suitable for existing aircraft and fuel infrastructure presentation. eSAF produced in Schwedt aims to receive ASTM and RFNBO certification to meet all technical and regulatory requirements for distribution at European airports.

Future-Proof-Connectivity

Planned integration into Germany’s hydrogen core network (Wasserstoff-Kernnetz) provides future-proof connectivity, supply resilience, and scalability.
